Frequently Asked Questions

Asbestos can be safe to live with if ACMs are left undisturbed. When disturbed and broken, asbestos
releases fibres into the air that can be inhaled and become lodged in the lungs, causing serious
health problems.

Asbestos was widely used during the construction of buildings during the 20 th century due to its low
cost, sound absorbing and fire and heat resistant properties. It is estimated that the UK imported
over 170,000 tonnes of asbestos each year during its peak.

Asbestos can be found in concrete and cement, bricks, roofing, drywall, insulation, pipes, gaskets,
joint compounds, flooring and paints and sealants among other locations.

Asbestos can cause numerous health issues including Mesothelioma, Asbestos-related lung cancer,
Asbestosis and Diffuse Pleural Thickening.
While any exposure to asbestos is bad for health, long term and multiple exposures are the most
likely to cause fatal or life-altering issues.
