What is bird netting?
Bird netting is a physical barrier made from high-density material stretched across openings and exposed areas to prevent birds from entering. It creates a sealed enclosure that blocks access to potential nesting and roosting sites without harming the birds.
The netting is available in different mesh sizes to target specific species. A 50mm mesh is standard for use against pigeons, while smaller mesh sizes are used to deter starlings, sparrows, and other small urban birds. The material is UV-stabilised, flame-retardant, and designed to withstand years of exposure to the elements.
All of our bird netting installations are humane and fully compliant with the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. It does not trap birds, but prevents them from reaching areas where they would otherwise nest and roost.
How does bird netting stop pigeons from nesting in your building?
Bird netting stops pigeons from nesting by closing off the spaces they want to enter. It creates a strong physical barrier across exposed, sheltered, or hard-to-reach areas, stopping them from landing and forcing them to move elsewhere.
For large or hard-to-reach areas, bird netting is the only deterrent method that completely excludes birds from entering your building – unlike anti-bird spikes or wire systems, which protect individual surfaces once birds are already inside.
Where does bird netting work best?
Bird netting works best where scale, height, and layout of a space make other bird-proofing, like anti-bird spikes, impractical. This includes:
- Roof voids and plant areas
Roof-level rooms, HVAC units, and service areas often attract nesting pigeons. Netting seals open sides and access gaps, helping keep birds away from sensitive equipment and hard-to-clean areas. - Warehouses and loading bays
Large openings make warehouses and loading docks easy for pigeons to enter. Netting closes off entry points while still allowing vehicles, stock, and staff to move through safely. - Courtyards and open structures
Courtyards, atriums, and semi-enclosed spaces can create sheltered nesting spots. Overhead netting covers the open space above, helping keep the area below cleaner without blocking light or airflow. - Solar panels and roof spaces
Pigeons often nest beneath solar panels for warmth and shelter. Netting can cover wider roof areas or full installations, helping reduce mess, disruption, and access to nesting spots.
What are the benefits of bird netting services?
There are many benefits to professional bird netting services, including:
- Protecting your building from pigeons and other pest birds and stopping them from roosting and nesting.
- Bird netting can last over 10 years as a low-maintenance bird control solution when properly installed.
- Discreet coverage of large or irregular spaces that other bird control methods (e.g., spikes or wires) can’t protect.
- No need for cleaning or repair costs caused by guano accumulation, surface corrosion, and blocked drains.
- Improved hygiene and food safety compliance, environmental health inspections, and facilities management standards.

How does bird netting compare to other bird control methods?
Choosing the right bird proofing depends on the area you need to protect, how birds are using the site, and how severe the problem has become:
Bird spikes
Anti-bird spikes are best for installing on narrow ledges, signs, and individual landing points. Not designed to protect open spaces.
Bird wire
Ideal as a lower-profile bird-proofing solution needed to maintain a building’s visual appeal (e.g., architectural features, heritage buildings). Not suitable for heavy bird presence with established nests and roosting spots.
Birds of prey
Our hawking and falconry services discourage nuisance birds from settling around large outdoor areas, waste sites, and industrial estates. However, it does not physically block access to nesting or roosting areas like other bird-proofing solutions.
