Grey squirrel control and the law
Grey squirrel control is governed by UK law. Grey squirrels are an invasive species, and a captured grey squirrel must not be released back into the wild. This is set out in the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Invasive Alien Species (Enforcement and Permitting) Order 2019. Anyone who catches one alive must deal with it humanely – which means DIY trapping can easily lead to breaking the law without realising it.
