Pest control for warehouses and distribution centres

Warehouse pest control keeps pests out of buildings that are easy to get into and hard to inspect.

Open loading bays, constant deliveries and large racked spaces give rats, mice, birds and insects plenty of ways in, and once inside they contaminate goods and damage packaging. One infestation can mean rejected stock or a failed audit.

Acorn protects your stock, keeps your site running and gives you the records customers and auditors expect. We check yards, drains, doors and rooflines as well as your storage areas, so we can stop pests where they get in.

  • Warehouses and distribution centres
  • Logistics hubs and fulfilment centres
  • Food storage sites and cold stores
  • Industrial units and manufacturing stores
  • Packaging and raw material stores
  • Retail stockrooms, depots and trade counters
  • Facilities management and multi-site contracts

For offices, shops and other business premises, see our commercial pest control services.

Emergency warehouse pest control

Acorn provides emergency warehouse pest control for problems that can’t wait, such as rodents in a food storage area or pests found just before an audit. We prioritise urgent warehouse call-outs and aim to visit within 48 hours.

We assess the activity, treat the immediate problem, and tell you which areas and stock need checking. Acting quickly limits the stock at risk and gets your site back to normal sooner.

What are the signs of pests in a warehouse?

The most common signs of pests in a warehouse are droppings near walls and pallets, and gnawed or damaged packaging.

You may need professional pest control if you notice:

  • Droppings along walls, under racking or around pallets
  • Gnawed packaging, pallets, cables or stock
  • Dark smear marks along walls, racking and door edges
  • Rats or mice in yards, loading bays or storage areas
  • Burrows along external walls or yard edges
  • Bird fouling around loading bays, canopies and entrances
  • Webbing, small holes or tracks through dust on stored goods
  • Activity coming back after DIY treatment

Which pests are most common in warehouses?

Rats and mice are the most common warehouse pests, followed by birds, flies and stored product insects.

Rats

Rats usually start outside, in yards, bin stores and drains, then get in through damaged doors, gaps around pipes and drain defects. They contaminate stock and chew through packaging and cables. We trace where they’re getting in, treat the source and show you which defects to fix. Find out more about our rat control.

Mice

Mice squeeze through tiny gaps and settle in racking, wall voids and stacked packaging, where they’re hard to spot. They breed quickly and contaminate far more stock than they eat. We pair treatment with proofing to stop mice getting back into storage areas. Find out more about our mice control.

Birds

Pigeons and gulls roost on canopies, ledges and racking near open loading doors. Their fouling creates slip risks and damages stock, and nesting material blocks gutters. We use bird proofing such as netting and spikes to keep them out of key areas.

Flies and cockroaches

Flies and cockroaches gather around waste areas, drains and staff kitchens, and can carry bacteria onto goods and surfaces. We treat active infestations and advise on the cleaning and waste control that keeps numbers down. Find out more about our fly control and cockroach control.

How does our warehouse pest control service work?

Our warehouse pest control service follows a clear, three-step process, so you always know what to expect.

Step 1: Inspection & risk assessment

We survey your building, yard and goods-in areas, identify the pests present and map where they’re getting in. You get a site plan showing every monitoring point.

Step 2: Targeted treatment & proofing

We treat active infestations with the method best suited to the pest and the area, and show you where rodent proofing will stop pests coming back. Where we use rodenticides, we follow the UK Rodenticide Stewardship Regime and keep bait in secured boxes out of reach of staff and stock.

Step 3: Follow-up visits & reporting

We return to check monitoring points and re-treat where needed until activity stops. Every visit is recorded through ServiceTracker, ready for your next audit.

How can you prevent pests in a warehouse?

You prevent pests in a warehouse by sealing the routes they use to get in and removing the food and shelter that keeps them there.

Treatment clears an active infestation, and these steps keep it clear:

  • Keep roller shutters and loading doors closed when not in use, with brush strips or seals fitted
  • Repair damaged vents, air bricks and cladding
  • Seal gaps around pipes, cables and service entries
  • Leave a clear gap between racking and walls so you can check behind stock
  • Check deliveries for signs of pests before they go into storage
  • Clear up spills and damaged stock promptly
  • Keep bin stores and yards tidy and away from doors

We can survey your buildings and recommend the pest proofing work that will make the biggest difference.

Warehouse pest control FAQs

What pests are most common in warehouses?

Rats and mice are the most common warehouse pests, followed by birds, flies and stored product insects such as moths and beetles. The risk depends on what you store, how often loading doors are open and how well waste is managed. Sites holding food, packaging or soft materials usually face the highest pressure.

How often should a warehouse have pest control?

Most warehouses need pest control visits every six to eight weeks, with more frequent checks for food storage sites or buildings with recurring pest activity. Sites certified to BRCGS Storage and Distribution set visit frequency through a pest risk assessment, which typically points to inspections at least every six weeks. Low-risk sites may need fewer visits.

Does BRCGS require a pest control contractor?

BRCGS allows warehouses to manage pest control in-house instead of using a contractor, as long as staff are trained and competent, pesticides are stored securely and every inspection is recorded. Many warehouses find a specialist contractor easier, because contractors bring the training, records and in-depth surveys auditors expect.

Who is responsible for pest control in a warehouse?

The business occupying the warehouse is usually responsible for day-to-day pest control, including keeping records. Food businesses have a legal duty to control pests on their premises. Lease terms decide who pays for repairs and proofing, so check whether building defects fall to you or your landlord.
