Pest control for farms and agricultural sites
Farm pest control from Acorn protects your stored feed and grain and keeps your farm ready for assurance inspections.
Rats and mice contaminate feed and spread disease to livestock, and an uncontrolled infestation can put your assurance status at risk.
We check boundaries, drains and building edges as well as the areas where you’ve seen activity, so we can stop pests where they get in.
We provide agricultural pest control for farms and rural businesses across Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Yorkshire. Sites we cover include:
- Livestock and dairy farms
- Arable farms and grain stores
- Poultry units
- Feed stores and agricultural warehouses
- Food supply and processing sites
- Farm shops and rural estates
Pest control for Red Tractor and farm assurance
Acorn gives you the pest control records Red Tractor and other farm assurance schemes ask for, ready to show your auditor.
That covers site surveys, a bait plan with mapped bait points, an environmental risk assessment before any bait goes down and a record of every visit.
We keep everything in ServiceTracker, so your records and recommendations are in one place when an audit comes round.
If you’re already assured, we’ll review your current plan before your next inspection and fix any gaps, such as missing bait point maps or out-of-date risk assessments.
For ongoing cover, our pest control contracts add scheduled inspections across one site or several.
What are the signs of pests on a farm?
The most common sign of pests on a farm is damage to stored feed or grain, along with droppings in stores and outbuildings.
You may need professional pest control if you notice:
- Droppings in feed rooms, grain stores or around livestock housing
- Gnawed sacks, packaging, cables or woodwork
- Burrows along walls, banks or under buildings
- Dark smear marks along walls and beams
- Rats or mice out in the daytime, which often points to a heavy infestation
- Birds nesting or roosting inside barns and feed stores
- Fouling on stored products, equipment or walkways
- Heavy fly activity around livestock, bedding or waste
Which pests are most common on farms?
Rats and mice are the most common farm pests, followed by birds and flies. Here’s what each one does on a farm and how we deal with it.
Rats
Brown rats are the main rodent pest on UK farms. They burrow under buildings, along banks and around drains, and travel between feed stores, yards and livestock housing. They contaminate feed, damage cables and can carry diseases such as leptospirosis. We find where rats are getting in and what’s feeding them, then treat the source and advise on proofing.
Mice
House mice can squeeze through gaps around the width of a pencil and often settle in grain stores, feed rooms and insulated buildings. They breed quickly and contaminate far more feed than they eat. We pair mouse pest control treatment with proofing to stop mice getting back into your stores.
Birds
Pigeons, sparrows and starlings roost in barns, feed stores and loading bays, fouling stored products and blocking gutters with nesting material. Wild birds are protected by law, so we use bird proofing and deterrents such as netting and spikes to keep them out of key buildings.
Flies and insects
Flies breed in manure, bedding, waste and standing water, and heavy activity affects livestock welfare and hygiene in food storage areas. We treat fly infestations and advise on the drainage and waste management that keeps numbers down.

How does our farm pest control service work?
Our farm pest control service follows a clear, three-step process, so you always know what to expect.
Step 1: Inspection & assessment
We survey your buildings, stores and boundaries, identify any pests present and map where they’re getting in. Before any bait is laid, we assess the risk to your livestock, pets and local wildlife. You get a clear plan based on your site, your stock and any assurance requirements.
Step 2: Targeted treatment
We treat active infestations with the method best suited to the pest and the setting, using non-chemical methods first wherever they’ll work. We’ll also show you where proofing will stop pests coming back.
Step 3: Follow-up visits & reporting
We return to check bait and monitoring points, remove any dead rodents and re-treat where needed until activity stops. We record every visit on ServiceTracker for your assurance file.

How can you prevent pests on farms?
You prevent pests on farms by limiting their access to food and shelter and sealing the routes they use to get into buildings.
Treatment clears an active infestation, and the following steps keep it clear:
- Store feed and grain in sealed bins or rodent-proof stores
- Clean up spilt feed promptly
- Keep yards and building edges clear of clutter
- Manage waste and manure away from stores
- Repair damaged doors, vents, air bricks and cladding
- Seal gaps around pipework and service entries
- Block bird access to roof spaces and feed stores
We can survey your buildings and recommend the pest proofing work that will make the biggest difference.
